Perfect, Helen. Conservative voices implying that the riots are just ordinary people expressing frustration have been driving me mad over the last 24-48 hours. It’s clear to anyone with eyes to see that a level of reasonable concern about immigration and crimes committed by immigrants is one thing; what has happened in the last 48 hours is entirely another. Thank you for your clarity of writing and thinking. 🙂🙏👍
They’ll be shutting up and deleting those tweets within a day or two, mark my words. This is January 6th on steroids and a lot of people are going to be backing the hell away when footage makes its way into the press.
Helen is incessantly rational – yes, a voice of reason. And in so doing, lets the chips fall where they may, even at some emotional cost to herself from energetically engaging others in highly public, occasionally heated, discussions, where far too many of those replying aren't responding in kind.
Very clearly put, Helen. I agree that the riots are abhorrent and need to be called out. One minor critique: crimes committed by second-generation immigrants are quite relevant to the immigration debate. It's often the second generation, not the first, that has a higher crime rate than the native population (in Europe). Rioting and threats to deport a full citizen are obviously not helpful, but it doesn't seem unlikely to me that a lower rate of immigration would help reduce fractions and decrease the crime rate of second-generation immigrants.
A typical BLM protester over-estimates the # of unarmed black victims shot by police each year by 2-3 orders of magnitude.
However, the "far right" in UK are factually correct that immigrants commit violent crime and sexual assault at rates extraordinarily higher than natives and are a net economic drain on the nation. This may seem strange to an American observer, however there is a finite number of high-quality immigrants, and they overwhelmingly choose the US, not the UK or EU.
There’s far too many commentators trying to use the riots to boost their take on immigration. However the “they’re all terrible people, that’s why they riot” approach, useful though it is to avoid the “far right” brush, isn’t entirely honest either.
People get swept up in riots. Not everybody who came out of curiosity tried to burn mosques. The earlier gatherings were simply under the banner of “Enough is Enough”, they were a reaction to another ISIS style attack, regardless of what the actual motive and browser history of the killer turns out to be.

Preach, sister! This by far the best thing I have read about a thoroughly depressing week for Britain.
A voice of reason among so much noise!
Helen Pluckrose for PM

Please take care of your health, Helen. The world really, really needs you right now.
